9/11 Recovery

The September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center continue to have serious and lasting impacts on New York and its residents. From long-term health problems, to extensive job loss, to extreme difficulty making mortgage and rental payments or keeping a small business going, thousands of New Yorkers continue to deal first hand with the aftermath of the disaster. My top priority since 9/11 has been to strengthen the federal response in each area of the recovery and to ensure that adequate federal aid is provided to the city for each specific needs that emerged from the disaster.

Appropriations

I am always working to ensure that New York City is treated fairly in the annual approriations process.

Census

As the former ranking member of the Subcommittee on Federalism and the Census, I fought to ensure that the 2000 and 2010 Census would be fair and accurate. The importance of accurate data cannot be minimized. Decennial census data is used to ensure fair representation and the fair distribution of federal funds. I’m working to defend the American Community Survey and Economic Census from efforts to eliminate their funding. These surveys are among the most detailed and useful to the public and private sectors. In the midst of economic times like these, it’s self-defeating for government to eliminate tools for job creators.

Criminal Justice

Congress should be working to reduce crime by keeping dangerous weapons off our nation’s streets and ensuring that criminals pay their debts to society. I have been an outspoken advocate for strong gun control laws during my tenure in Congress. Additionally, I introduced legislation, "The Debbie Smith Act," that was signed into law to ensure that DNA evidence is processed in a timely manner so that rapists are put behind bars.

Defense

Throughout history, America’s military men and women have courageously fought for the causes of freedom and democracy. Congress should work to protect not only the rights of active duty servicemen and women, but also the rights of those who served before them. The men and women who risk their lives for our country deserve the best our nation can offer.

Economy

As Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, I will continue to aggressively push to address the serious economic crisis our country faces. The Committee will focus on the economic crisis and recession as they unfold, and will be actively involved with crafting our path to recovery.

Education

As a former educator, Congresswoman Maloney understands the importance of a quality education. Throughout her career, Rep. Maloney have advocated for strong federal investment in our schools, including Title I funds to help schools that serve low-income students, and School Improvement Grants to turn around low-performing schools.

Energy

Through out my time in Congress, I have been an advocate for national energy policies that increase energy independence, protect our environment, and use our natural resources responsibly.

Environment

Since coming to Congress, I have been an outspoken supporter of policies that protect our environment. As a nation, we must combat global warming and maintain clean air and clean water. We must also protect our national parks, forests, and wilderness areas and ensure that drilling for oil and gas doesn’t harm our most pristine lands, like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

Financial Services

Financial Services is the most important industry for the New York City economy and the biggest job creator in the region. As the senior New York Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, I believe one of my chief tasks is to maintain the preeminence of New York City as the world’s financial center. Since coming to Congress, I have advocated modernization of financial services regulation, state-of-the-art consumer protection and vigilant oversight of the safety-and-soundness of the banking sector. I am committed to defending the health of our financial institutions so that they can lead our economic recovery.

Foreign Affairs

The world is truly a global community. I am proud that my congressional district is home to a diverse population of thousands of people who can trace their ancestries to all parts of the world.

Gun Safety

Gun violence continues to be a major problem plaguing communities across the country. The massacres at Virginia Tech University, Fort Hood, Texas, Tucson, Arizona, Aurora, Colorado, and Newtown, Connecticut serve as reminders that we need to fight for commonsense policies to make Americans safer.

Health

I believe that the priorities of our nation must include policies that protect and promote the health and well-being of ALL Americans.

Homeland Security

Nobody knows better than New Yorkers the immediate need for terrorism preparedness from the federal level all the way down to our neighborhoods. As the site of the most horrific terrorist attack in our country's history and as the city that remains terrorist target number one, New Yorkers have a deep and vested interest in making sure we prevent or at least are fully ready for future acts of terrorism, so that what happened on 9/11 is not repeated - in New York or any other community across the country.

Immigration

Our nation’s history is rooted in the strength of immigrants. As New Yorkers, we have a special understanding of how America’s melting pot can create a rich tapestry of ethnic, cultural and religious traditions that infuse vitality into the economic and social aspects of our communities. Throughout my time in Congress, I have made immigration issues a priority, and I strongly believe that by protecting the rights of workers, securing the border, and modernizing our pathway to legal immigration, the hope that we can fix our broken system will become a reality. I am proud to share with you several key pieces of legislation, all of which I am a cosponsor, that would provide a pathway to citizenship, keep families intact, create a level playing field, and improve our economy.

LGBT Rights

Congresswoman Maloney has been a strong supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community throughout her career in public service. She is a member of the LGBT Equality Caucus and a strong supporter of anti-discrimination legislation, including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Student Non-Discrimination Act, and other federal measures to expand and protect the rights of LGBT individuals.

Local Issues

Nothing is more important to me than the quality of life in my district, and I am proud of the work I have done to improve infrastructure, preserve historic neighborhoods, fight for better zoning and create schools in my district.

Newspapers

Since the ratification of the Bill of Rights, the federal government has acknowledged that the press is an institution which is afforded special protections by name. Yet, newspapers across the country are closing down or facing bankruptcy at an alarming rate.

Overseas Americans

Millions of Americans, including military personnel and civilians, live and work across the world. Although they live overseas, many of these U.S. citizens continue to vote and pay taxes in the U.S. Whether or not they work for American businesses overseas, they help increase exports of American goods and services because they traditionally buy American goods, sell American goods, and create business opportunities for U.S. companies and workers. Their role in strengthening the U.S. economy, creating jobs in the United States, and extending American influence around the globe is vital to the well-being of our nation.

Oversight and Government Reform

I am a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction to investigate any federal program and any matter with federal policy implications. I sit on three subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Government Management, Organization, and Procurement; the Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives; and the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs.

Protecting Animals

During my time in Congress, I have consistently supported efforts to ensure the humane treatment of animals. Mistreatment of animals is cruel and unnecessary, and I am working hard to prevent inhumane practices.

Reproductive Choice

In the 40 years since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, which guarantees constitutional protection of a woman’s decision whether to terminate her pregnancy, over 1,000 separate legislative proposals have been introduced affecting abortion policy. The vast majority of these proposals have sought to restrict the availability of abortions, and this same trend can be seen in the Republican House majority. There is a war on women underway and in the last Congress alone, ten votes were taken to roll back on the protections of Roe, as well as numerous votes to curtail family planning funding and even allow hospitals to deny women lifesaving emergency medical care.

Seniors and Social Security

Since her election to Congress, Representative Carolyn Maloney has worked to get senior citizens the care and resources they need and deserve.

Stimulus - The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

The current economic crisis requires bold solutions that address the enormity of our economic woes, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan will do just that. It will blunt the effects of the recession and help families in need, it will create millions of jobs and make key infrastructure investments in our future.

Transportation

As I work to improve the quality of life in my district, I have been focusing on transportation issues that impact our lives on a daily basis.

Veterans

Those who bravely served our country in the armed forces deserve all the benefits to which they are entitled. It is important to honor those who served our country and especially those who were disabled by their service. As the daughter, spouse, and sister of veterans, Rep. Maloney honors the millions of veterans who live across the country and in New York for their service and sacrifice.

Water Resources

To offer more opportunity for public scrutiny of project requests submitted for the Water Resources Development Act, I have posted information on these requests submitted to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for the Water Resources Development Act of 2010. Please find them listed below.

Working Families

In today’s world, we all know how hard it can be to juggle both work and family. That is why I have worked in Congress to advance legislation that supports working families. I was a proud supporter of the Family and Medical Leave Act and I fully support an increase in the federal minimum wage. I have also authored legislation that would expand workforce protections.

Women's Issues

Since coming to Congress, I have worked hard to become an advocate and leader for women, with a special emphasis on women’s health needs, reproductive freedom, international family planning, and securing women’s equality in the Constitution.
