Water transportation plays an intricate part in the United States’ economy. Nearly one-third of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is derived from international trade, and 99 % of that trade passes through our nation’s ports. Within America, every single state relies on at least 15 seaports to handle its imports and exports. On Tuesday, May 20, House Republicans passed the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) to strengthen and support these vital waterways which will help foster a strong economy.

But perhaps most importantly, WRRDA provides Americans with what they need most – jobs. 30 million U.S. jobs are related to international trade. The projects WRRDA supports will pair hard-working Americans with good-paying jobs – jobs that will directly improve our economy and water system.

By breaking down barriers between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Congress, WRRDA puts more people to work, more quickly. Cutting red tape in Congress is a priority for House Republicans, and this bill will efficiently reform our infrastructure policies to save time and money. The lack of earmarks – the first time in history – establishes a new, transparent process for future bills.

In addition, WRRDA cuts wasteful spending. By deauthorizing $18 billion of old, inactive projects, American’s tax dollars will be saved. House Republicans understand that America’s budget must be handled like that of a family’s – with controlled costs and responsible reforms.

House Republicans have again voted to support a bill that strengthens America’s economy, puts Americans back to work, and eliminates unnecessary government waste. WRRDA builds an America that works – one that will continue to work for years to come.
