Tax Reform
Like many Washingtonians, I believe our tax code is overly complex and confusing. As the former director of the Washington Department of Revenue before coming to Congress, I understand the need for a tax code that is simplified and fair for hardworking families and small businesses. Our current tax system undermines competitiveness when it should be encouraging job creation and innovation. We need to comprehensively reform our tax code. Our nation’s tax structure is unnecessarily complicated and the tax burden is not fairly shared. We need to be supporting the middle class as their success and prosperity will drive long-term economic growth. We should look to eliminate inefficient and unfair tax breaks and subsidies that don’t make sense in today’s economy. Any time our federal government offers a tax break or subsidy, we should consider it as a budgetary expenditure. I believe that we must evaluate these expenditures regularly and eliminate those that are no longer giving us an adequate return.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the federal delegation representing Snohomish County called on the Internal Revenue Service to provide tax relief for families who have been affected by the State Route 530 mudslide.
In a letter sent today to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Patty Murray (D-WA), and U.S. Representatives Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Rick Larsen (WA-02), urged the IRS to extend the tax filing deadline for affected individuals in Darrington, Oso and Arlington. The deadline for Americans to file their taxes is in 12 days, on Tuesday, April 15.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today the House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) released a series of principles that outline his priorities for legislation to close an Internet tax loophole and allow local Main Street retailers to compete on a level playing field with online-only retailers. In a rare show of bipartisanship, House members from Washington are lining up behind legislation that would make permanent the ability of state residents to take a federal income tax deduction for the state sales taxes they pay.

A new law could add millions of dollars to the state's coffers. The U.S. Senate recently passed a bill that would force online shoppers to pay sales tax. Washington Congresswoman Suzan Delbene says taxing all oneline sales would raise more than $800 million for Washington state.
