Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) issued the following statement marking Veterans Day:

“Every year on Veterans Day, we come together to honor those who have sacrificed for our liberty and our national defense. We pause from our everyday lives and reflect on those sacrifices made here at home and around the world – sacrifices that make our prosperity possible and provide us with the security and stability on which to build strong futures.

“More than two million Americans have seen combat in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it’s estimated that one-third of them are battling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Traumatic Brain Injury. On average, we’re losing 22 veterans to suicide every day. And the delayed care at VA medical facilities that made headlines during the past year is absolutely shameful.

“With more veterans than ever using VA medical facilities, Congress and the administration must investigate fully, make sure those responsible are held accountable, and reassess the federal investment in the agency to ensure all veterans are getting the care they need – when they need it. I am encouraged by the commitment of VA Secretary McDonald to reorient the department and hold people accountable for the problems we’ve seen.

“After fighting for our nation, no veteran should have to fight for health care. No veteran should have to fight for housing, for job training, for a shot at a decent career. No veteran should have to fight to get a good education or a secure retirement.

“On behalf of the Third District, on this Veterans Day, I am proud to thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice for our nation, and for their dedication to our community.”
