Republicans Call On Boehner To Pass Clean CR

Oct 7, 2013

"To be absolutely clear, we are going to accept nothing that relates to Obamacare." [Press Conference, 9/27/13]

DPCC Chairman Chuck Schumer (D-NY):

"So, Speaker Boehner, put our bill on the floor. Stand aside, let members vote their conscience, and the government will stay open Tuesday morning, because we are confident there are more than enough votes to pass the Senate bill." [Press Conference, 9/27/13]

AT LEAST 24 REPUBLICANS WOULD VOTE FOR A CLEAN CR...AND THE LIST IS GROWING:

Deputy Whip Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK): "Keith Merckx, a reporter for Radio Oklahoma, provided HuffPost with an audio file from an Oct. 1 interview he did with Cole, in which the congressman said, 'Let's pass what's called a clean continuing resolution. I'll certainly support that if it's put on the floor.'" [Huffington Post/Radio Oklahoma, 10/7/2013]

Rep. Bill Young (R-FL): Young said he would support a "clean" stop-gap spending bill, one that does not defund or delay Obamacare, so that budget conferees could begin working on larger issues. Young said he told Speaker John Boehner, "let's get on to legislating." [Tampa Bay Times, 10/2/13]

Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ): Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd, called the situation "unacceptable" and told The Press of Atlantic City that he was in favor of "whatever gets a successful conclusion to this" - and a "clean" continuing resolution, which does not include postponement of the Affordable Care Act, "is one of those options." [The Press of Atlantic City, 10/1/13]

Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA): The two [Rigell and Forbes] said they favor passing a six-week budget - known as a continuing resolution - that already passed muster in the Senate. [The Virginian-Pilot, 10/2/13]

Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA): "Republicans fought the good fight. The fight continues but is not advanced by a government shutdown that damages our economy and harms our military. The time has come to pass a clean CR to reopen the government." [Press Release, 10/1/13]

Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick (R-PA): A Fitzpatrick aide said the Pennsylvania Republican would support a clean CR. [The Hill, 10/1/13]

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA): [Huffington Post, 9/30/13]

ON THE PRECIPICE OF SHUTDOWN, REPUBLICANS FINALLY ADMIT: A CLEAN CR WOULD PASS

Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA): "It Would Pass With a Strong Bipartisan Vote"

"I believe most House Republican members would be okay with John Boehner if he were to decide to allow a vote." If he did, Dent continued, "it would pass with a strong bipartisan vote." [Washington Post, 9/30/13]

House Republican Deputy Whip Tom Cole (R-OK): House Could Pass a Clean CR:

TODD: Correct me if I'm wrong; you put a clean budget funding bill through November 15 or December 15, pick your number, and it probably passes with a fairly strong majority in the House if it were just put on the floor. Is that your read? You count votes.

COLE: I think that yeah. I think that's actually a fair read. [MSNBC, 9/30/13]

Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID): "I Think There's Enough People in the Republican Party Who Are Willing To" Pass A Clean CR:

MYERS: So what's the endgame, though, Congressman? Are you willing to vote for-- a continued resolution that comes back that does not delay or de-fund Obamacare?

LABRADOR: I am not. But I think there's enough people in the Republican Party who are willing to do that. And I think that's what you're going to see. [NBC Meet the Press, 9/29/13]

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA): "We're Pretty Much Out of Options At This Point":

"We're pretty much out of options at this point,'' said Rep. Devin Nunes (R., Calif.), criticizing the faction of the party most unwilling to compromise. [WSJ, 9/30/13]

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME): Linking Obamacare to CR "A Strategy That Cannot Possibly Work":

"What is abundantly clear is that the American people do not want dysfunction in Washington to lead to another government shutdown. A shutdown will only further damage our struggling economy and reverse an already slow climb out of recession. I voted against Obamacare and have repeatedly voted to repeal, reform, and replace it, but I disagree with the strategy of linking Obamacare with the continuing functioning of government-a strategy that cannot possibly work." [Press Release, 9/30/13]

It's time for Speaker Boehner bring up a clean CR for a vote or face a Republican government shutdown.
