New Dem of the Week: Denny Heck (WA-10)

Congressman Heck meets with AlphaGraphics Tacoma in Fife, Washington. The company opened in 2012 with 3 employees and has since hired 5 more.

Why He's Proud to Be a New Dem:

“America needs leaders willing to propose serious solutions to tackle the toughest problems of our time, and the New Democrat Coalition is ready to step in and fill the void. We care about the middle class and those working to get into it. We believe the best ideas come from evidence-based and data-driven approaches to policymaking, irrespective of political labels. We believe the best way to secure America’s economic future is to grow small businesses, the backbone of our economy. I will continue to work with my New Dem colleagues to find ways to move our country forward.”

His pragmatic, problem-solving experience:

In the decade prior to his election to Congress, Denny grew several small businesses in Washington State. One of those businesses, which specializes in workplace learning and training, was started in Olympia with only two employees. It has since grown to employ over 300 people. A strong believer in the importance of open government, Denny founded TVW, Washington's state-level equivalent of C-SPAN. The network has been on-air for over 20 years.

Denny's innovative policy entrepreneurship:

Denny is a leader in the fight to renew the U.S. Export-Import Bank, an independent entity that extends export financing to American businesses. In the last year alone, the Bank supported over 205,000 American jobs. His efforts to renew this vital institution earned the praise of Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, who noted Denny's work to "make sure that businesses in his state and across the country have the tools they need to compete in overseas markets."
