WASHINGTON — A panel of U.S. House lawmakers would be responsible for investigating unresolved matters for unaccounted military personnel under legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., on Wednesday.

Bachmann’s resolution, which comes less than a week before the Memorial Day holiday honoring the nation’s military who died in war, would create a 10-member committee to investigate all 83,000 unresolved prisoner of war and missing in action cases, have hearings on POW/MIA issues, and look for ways to better identify, search for, and return remains of fallen service members.

The House committee would focus on military from the Vietnam era, the Korean conflict, World War II, Cold War missions, Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.

“It is our duty and responsibility to the heroic men and women who have given us so much to never stop fighting to bring each and every American home,” Bachmann said in a statement. “Congress must look at ways to better identify, locate and, return fallen service members or adequately follow up all reports of sightings.”
