FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 3, 2004LARSON NAMED RANKING MEMBER ON ENERGY SUBCOMMITTEE
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01) has been chosen by his Democratic colleagues to serve as Ranking Member of the House Science Committee's Subcommittee on Energy.
"I am excited about the opportunities this position offers as we work towards achieving America's energy independence through greater investment in hydrogen fuel cell technology," said Larson. "I look forward to continuing to work with the Committee's Ranking Member, Bart Gordon, Chairman Boehlert, Subcommittee Chair Judy Biggert, and my colleagues.
"Energy affects a number of critical policy areas, including the environment, the economy, and our foreign policy. We must aggressively seek to end our dependence on foreign oil and I will work with my colleagues to continue to build a coalition to advance this crucial goal. Fuel cells will allow us to wean our nation off of foreign oil, will dramatically reduce rates of environmental pollution, and contribute to the creation of a highly-skilled workforce in a high-growth industry. We must heavily invest in the further development of this technology in an effort to reduce its cost and establish our energy independence."
Larson has previously introduced legislation that would invest more than $1 billion in hydrogen fuel cell technology development and demonstration programs: the Energy Independence Act, H.R. 1830; and the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Authorization Act, H.R. 1395.
The Subcommittee has legislative jurisdiction and general and special oversight and investigative authority on all matters relating to energy research, development, and demonstration projects.
