Goodwin College Receives Federal Funding to Provide

Nursing School Scholarships to Disadvantaged Students

Hartford, CT-Today, U.S. Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01) announced Goodwin College will receive a $49,250 federal grant to provide academic scholarships for their nursing program to disadvantaged students. Goodwin College, founded in 1999, has the second largest nursing program in the state.

The Scholarships for Health Professions Students from Disadvantaged Backgrounds Grant Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides funding to health profession and nursing schools for scholarships to students in financial need, as well as students from racial minority groups.

"Connecticut has one of the most severe nursing shortages in the country, threatening the quality of health care in our state.  At the same time, students throughout the state and my district are unable to pursue a higher education due to financial constraints. ," said Congressman Larson."This funding to Goodwin College, in addition to enhancing diversity in the health profession and aiding the state in solving its nursing crisis, will allow students, regardless of their economic background, the opportunity to gain an education at one of our state's top nursing programs."

According to the most up to date National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses conducted by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, nurses from minority backgrounds represent approximately only 11% of the registered nurse workforce.
