Bachmann Statement on IRS Targeting Conservative Groups

May 13, 2013

Anoka, Minn.—Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (MN-06), Chairwoman of the Tea Party Caucus, released the following statement today in response to the admission from the IRS that they singled out Tea Party and conservative groups for additional scrutiny because of their political beliefs.

“It is outrageous that the IRS has admitted to intimidating and targeting Tea Party and conservative organizations because of their political beliefs. This is a stunning abuse of power and the American people deserve answers as to who authorized it—it is hard to believe this was a 'low-level' decision. And as one of the key agencies charged with enforcing Obamacare, it is also reasonable to ask if any healthcare decisions have been based on political affiliation and what assurances we have that this type of intimidation will never happen again.”

On April 23, 2012, Congresswoman Bachmann joined with 63 of her House colleagues to send a letter to IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman requesting that the IRS refrain from these abusive tactics.
