Around the Capitol
In September 1793, President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the US Capitol building. Unfortunately, he died a year before the building began being used, and his successor, President John Adams delivered the first Joint Session of Congress in the Capitol on November 22, 1800.
The US Capitol building is the original home to the US Supreme Court and Library of Congress. Due to space restrictions, however, both eventually moved into their own buildings and are now part of the Capitol Complex.
Today, the Capitol Complex includes the US Capitol, the House of Representatives Office Buildings, the Senate Office Buildings, the US Supreme Court and Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building, the 3 Library of Congress Buildings and the US Botanic Gardens in addition to the Capitol Grounds.
