Capitol Dome Restoration Project

Capitol Dome Restoration Project

Scaffolding gives dome a new look.

The scaffolding assembly on the Dome of the U.S. Capitol building is complete.

Visitors will notice the historic landmark has a new look as it undergoes a multi-year restoration project to repair damage caused by age and weather.

Construction lighting is now visible on the Capitol Dome. As certain portions of the scaffolding are completed, repairs will begin in enclosed areas. This work includes lead paint removal, cast iron repairs, new castings, and window repairs and replacement.

Additionally, visitors to the Capitol will notice extra fencing, supplies, and construction crews on the grounds as the restoration work begins.

Constructed of more than 8 million pounds of iron, the Dome has not undergone a complete restoration since 1960. The project, spearheaded by the Architect of the Capitol, will repair cracks that allow air, sunlight, snow, sleet, and rain inside the Dome, which is causing paint to chip and the iron to rust.

Tours of the Capitol are being conducted during the two-year project. Check with the Capitol Visitor Center for details.

More information about the restoration process is available from the Architect of the Capitol.
