ENGEL OFFERS LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH NEW EMBASSIES IN THE CARIBBEAN

WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today introduced legislation to expand American diplomatic efforts across the Caribbean. The United States–Caribbean Partnership Act of 2014 would establish new American embassies in five countries—Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines—with which the United States shares diplomatic relations but has no permanent diplomatic presence. In 2011, an amendment authored by Rep. Engel to establish these embassies was unanimously approved by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

ENGEL LEADS BIPARTISAN GROUP OF LAWMAKERS CALLING ON HAITIAN SENATE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH ELECTIONS

WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, was joined by a bipartisan group of 14 Senators and Members of Congress calling on the Haitian Senate to move forward with elections. In a letter to Simon Dieuseul Desras, President of the Senate of Haiti, the lawmakers urged Haitian Senators to pass legislation that would allow elections to take place and underscored the commitment of the United States to support free, fair, and transparent elections in Haiti.
