PRESS RELEASE: Congressman Filemon Vela and BEDC President Jason Hilts Participate in Roundtable Economic Discussion at White House Hosted by United States Trade Representative Mike Froman

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) and Jason Hilts, President/CEO of the Brownsville Economic Development Council (BEDC), participated in a roundtable discussion held in the White House’s Roosevelt Room hosted by United States Trade Representative Mike Froman and Assistant to the President and Director of the National Economic Council Jeff Zients.  The roundtable discussion focused on developing polices to help small businesses expand exports.

Given President Hilts experience with South Texas businesses, Congressman Vela invited him to share his experience with the group.

“Today’s meeting was a chance for high-level White House policymakers to hear firsthand about ongoing projects in South Texas and the benefits they offer to our region," said Congressman Vela.  “For example we discussed the importance to our economy of deepening the Brownsville ship channel, educating our region’s labor force, and reducing violence in Tamaulipas, Mexico."

"Having the opportunity to accompany Congressman Vela to meet with federal officials to discuss issues that affect economic development and trade in the Brownsville borderplex is invaluable," said Jason Hilts.  "It is important that the federal government understands that Brownsville is at the front door of international trade and development and with continual support new opportunities will be created that will benefit many.”

The Roosevelt Room was created in 1934. It occupies the original location of President Theodore Roosevelt’s office when the West Wing was built in 1902. President Richard Nixon named the room in 1969 to honor both Roosevelts.
