MEDIA ADVISORY: Congressman Filemon Vela to Host Military Academy Nomination Ceremony, Speak at Veterans Court Grand Opening, and Participate in Strong Cities, Strong Communities Press Conference
BROWNSVILLE, TX – Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) will host a special ceremony on Sunday, January 19, 2014, to honor and announce 17 student nominees to various U.S. Military Academies. The ceremony will take place at the Historic Brownsville Museum in Brownsville, Texas. This year’s students will receive nominations to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each year, Representative Vela has the privilege of nominating a limited number of students to be considered for admission at one of our country's elite military academies--offering young men and women a tremendous educational opportunity and the chance to serve our country.
On Tuesday, January 21, Congressman Vela will join Judge David Sachez and other county officials at the Cameron County Veterans Court grand opening. State District Judge David Sanchez will preside over the Veterans Court, which will provide a team-based approach to address the underlying cause of criminal behavior. The Court will work with the VA, the Cameron County Veterans Service Office, the District Attorneys Office and others to ensure that an enrolled vet is receiving the help they need. Upon a Vet’s successful completion of the Veterans Court program, the Court will dismiss the criminal charge.
Later in the day, Congressman Vela will join representatives from the City of Brownsville and United Brownsville at a press conference to discuss the Strong Cities, Strong Communities Initiative (SC2). Recently, Brownsville was selected by the Obama Administration to participate in SC2, which seeks to strengthen neighborhoods, towns, cities, and regions around the country by enhancing the capacity of local governments to develop and execute their economic vision and strategies, providing necessary technical assistance and access to federal agency expertise, and creating new public and private sector partnerships.
