PRESS RELEASE: Brownsville Selected as Location for White House Program

Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) Initiative to Focus on Federal Resources for South Texas

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the White House Council on Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) announced the selection of Brownsville, Texas and 6 other cities as participants in a program to help local communities spark economic growth.  The concept for the program, which began as a pilot program in 2011, was developed through engagement with mayors, Congress, and community organizations.

“The Strong Cities, Strong Communities initiative will focus the federal government on the economic needs of South Texas.  Brownsville, the only border community selected, will work with the SC2 program to bring federal investment in infrastructure, education, public health and other priorities to the region,” noted Congressman Vela.  “Brownsville is a growing city, and we need to work together in partnership with the federal government to ensure that economic expansion lifts our entire community.  As part of the President’s stated priority to strengthen the middle class, create jobs, and build ladders of opportunity, the SC2 program will help build a strong economy and a strong community in Brownsville where working families can share in the American dream.”

Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez, who is in Washington, DC today, echoed the Congressman’s sentiments by stating: “This is a great way to start off the new year.  Brownsville is definitely going in the right direction.”

“Our community is eager to meet and work with the Community Solutions Team assigned to assist Brownsville with the development of a comprehensive plan focused on wellness, education and economic development,” said Antonio “Tony” Martinez, Mayor of Brownsville, Texas. “We are confident the assistance provided will facilitate a model for other cities across the nation.”

“The City of Brownsville laid the groundwork for today’s announcement with the Imagine Brownsville Comprehensive Plan.  By bringing together leaders from across the community to identify concerns, set goals and lay out a path for achievement, Brownsville is positioned to put the plans in motion with the help of the SC2 initiative,” said Congressman Vela.
