Following a visit to communities near open-air petroleum coke storage sites in Chicago, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) announced they had asked the Centers for Disease Control to study the threat to public health posed by the substance on Monday, December 16. Durbin was joined on his tour by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) sounded the alarm about the House of Representatives' plans to cut funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Project by nearly 80 percent, severely impacting programs to ward off Asian carp, clean up beaches, and address other major ecological issues facing the lakes, at a news conference in Chicago on Monday, July 29.
