Gender Inequality in Latin America

Featuring a short screening of PBS’s
Becoming Papa: Fathers Key to Gender Justice

10:00-11:00 am
Wednesday, October 29th
Congressional Meeting Room North
Capitol Visitors Center

Latin America has made headway on gender equality. In 2010, the number of women in elected office increased to 20% and the rate of female participation in the labor force rose to 53%.

At the same time, gender-based violence remains a serious problem. Over half of the world’s countries with high femicide rates are in the region; El Salvador is home to the highest global murder rate of women.

Advancing gender equality is not only the right thing to do, it also has significant development implications. According to the World Bank, the poverty incidence tends to be lower in countries with greater gender equality. But addressing gender inequality throughout Latin America necessitates engaging men and boys.

Please join Congressman Farr's office at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 29th for a panel discussion and short screening of PBS’s Becoming Papa, a documentary about two Brazilian men transitioning towards violence-free lives with the organization Promundo.
