Shuster Votes for Budget Certainty and Smaller Government

WASHINGTON - Today Congressman Shuster joined his colleagues in the House to pass the FY2014 Omnibus Appropriations bill.  The omnibus, which passed 359 to 67, funds the federal government through September 30, 2014 and prevents another government shutdown.

The omnibus meets the spending levels set out in the Ryan-Murray budget agreement, with spending capped at $1.012T.  This is the fourth straight year House Republicans have cut spending- the first time that has happened since the Korean War.  Republicans have made a total of $165 billion in discretionary cuts since FY2010.

Upon passage of the bill, Shuster said, “I’m pleased today to join my colleagues in the House in passing a fiscally responsible funding plan that ends the months of budgetary uncertainty and prevents another government shutdown.  While not perfect, this omnibus represents some key victories over the Obama Administration and Senate Democrats, including cuts to the Obamacare slush fund and the controversial Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB).  I am also pleased we were able to correct the military retiree pension issue for our disabled veterans and survivors.”

The omnibus also freezes Obamacare funding at post-sequester levels, maintains all current pro-life riders, and restores the 1% military pension cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) cut for medically retired personnel and survivors.
