Discussion focused on helping small businesses expand through access to affordable capital

DOVER--U.S. Representative John Carney met with representatives from Delaware’s banking and small business communities on Monday afternoon to discuss opportunities for improving small business lending in Delaware.  The meeting was held at the WSFS Bank branch located in Dover Mart Shopping Center.

“Small businesses are critical to creating jobs and strengthening the economy,” said Congressman Carney.  “Delaware’s small businesses and community banks work hand-in-hand to support thousands of families in our state and improve the local economy.  It’s important that I hear their experiences, challenges, and suggestions, so I can work in Washington to help them succeed.”

Among the topics discussed were incentives to help small businesses invest and create jobs, as well as regulatory challenges that community banks face in providing affordable capital to businesses looking to expand.

“Congressman Carney understands the importance community banks have in Delaware and the role they play in supporting small businesses and the overall economy,” said David Bakerian, President of the Delaware Bankers’ Association.  “We certainly share his goal to help local banks lend to Delaware businesses so they can expand and create jobs.  We’ll continue working with the Congressman to build these relationships and help Delaware businesses get access to the credit they need.”

“Government creates the environment where businesses can succeed,” said Congressman Carney.  “Congress needs to put the policies in place that inspire confidence and stability so businesses will make investments in their future.  We also need to enforce common sense financial regulations that protect consumers without placing undue burdens on community banks and lenders.”
