Local Girl Scouts Treated to Capitol Visit after WH Cancels Tour
April 19 2013Congresswoman Ellmers Provides Special Accommodations to Troop
That Had Spent Year Fundraising, Only to See It Cancelled
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Renee Ellmers released the following statement this afternoon from her office in Washington:
"I was happy to join the girl scouts from Troop 1025 as they visited our nation's capital today. I was so disheartened to hear that their trip to visit the White House was cancelled and that all the money they had raised to make this trip a reality would be for naught. I'm pleased that we were able to make their visit worthwhile and provide a small source of fun while in Washington. It may not have been the White House, but I'm sure their trip will remain a happy memory for years to come."
Girl Scouts from Cumberland County, North Carolina were treated to a special day of visiting the Washington and the U.S. Capitol courtesy of Congresswoman Ellmers' office. In March, the Troop 1025 learned that the White House was cancelling all tours, blaming the sequester cuts. For the past year, the troop has been hosting fundraisers to raise the necessary funds to visit Washington and learn about their nation's history and government. Yet in March, the Obama Administration announced that they would be cancelling all future White House tours, and the scouts were left heartbroken, having already spent money on the deposits and reservations for the trip scheduled for this week.
Congresswoman Ellmers was notified of their plight and stepped in to help. She arranged to have tours coordinated for the Library of Congress, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and a private tour of the U.S. Capitol and floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Although it wasn't the White House, the scouts had a fun time visiting Washington and learning about our federal government in person.
