Congresswoman Ellmers Tours Areas Damaged by Storms, Calls on President Obama to Declare State of Emergency and Allow Federal Resources to Assist in Relief Efforts

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC-2) released the following statement today after visiting with victims and survivors of last week’s devastating storms in North Carolina:

“Like so many members of our community, I am shocked and deeply saddened by the destruction caused by last week’s storms throughout the region. Ever since the storm raged through Raleigh Saturday, I have been working with officials and first-responders to assess the damage and provide any and all services to those affected by this tragedy. This afternoon I sent a letter to President Obama, asking him to declare the state of North Carolina a major disaster area and provide federal funds and assistance as soon as possible. I hope that all Americans will keep the residents and families of North Carolina in their prayers as we continue to work in the rescue and recovery efforts.”

As soon as the storm descended on the Raleigh region Saturday, Congresswoman Ellmers cancelled her events and set up a base of operation with her staff to help assist first responders with resources and emergency aid. Drawing upon her experience as a registered nurse, Rep. Ellmers spent Saturday night volunteering at a Raleigh shelter where 150 students of Shaw University (some of whom were sick or injured) were staying. She continued on Sunday, surveying the storm damage in Lee, Harnett, and Johnston. On Monday, Congresswoman Ellmers toured the Food Lion Distribution Center in Dunn with FEMA representatives and then toured the Goodyear Plant in Fayetteville as well as Harnett and Lee counties.

Early this afternoon, after touring Shaw University with Senator Richard Burr, Congresswoman Ellemers sent a letter to President Obama asking for a federal major disaster emergency declaration and the release of funds to aid in the rescue and recovery. Later today, Congresswoman Ellmers will be meeting Senator Burr to tour Johnston County and will meet Sampson County Sheriff Thornton at Sampson EMS for a tour of damage to that region.
