There is the lack of common-sense used in developing new government regulations. Too often, red tape prevents people from starting a business, buying a home, or investing in innovation. These are the values that created our nation’s economy, and we should be encouraging, not preventing them.
I have had business owners tell me how regulatory agencies, like the EPA, have come into their businesses, told them they are violating a rule and to stop or be fined. In more than one case, the business owner asked the obvious next question, "What do I need to do to come into compliance?" and was told the agency didn't know, it was up to them to figure it out or suffer the consequences. We need a government that will work with citizens, not against them. An example of a government agency doing it right is OSHA's VPP program where regulators partner with industry to promote safety. There is also a problem with the time it takes to go through the permitting process. Delays mean higher cost and more time before people get jobs. I am committed to making it easier to get a yes from the government. I have supported legislation like MAP21, the 2012 highway bill that streamlines the approval process. I am a relentless advocate for better and smarter use of technology in government for things like claims processing in the VA. I also constantly push federal agencies to work harder, faster and smarter.
