Maintenance Mechanics

The Architect of the Capitol’s maintenance mechanics work around the clock to ensure the facilities are always performing to the best of their ability, supporting the building occupants and visitors.

The Architect of the Capitol’s maintenance mechanics work around the clock to ensure the facilities are always performing to the best of their ability, supporting the building occupants and visitors. This continual care of more than 17.5 million square feet of office space in more than 30 buildings can be quite the daunting task.

These members of the AOC team support general maintenance, repair and operation of mechanical and digital equipment; utility, electrical, elevator, fire protection suppression, alarm systems, HVAC, boiler/steam generating equipment, electronic systems, repairs/alterations and improvements to the buildings and grounds.

They examine complex air conditioning systems in order to troubleshoot, locate, and repair faulty equipment such as compressors, reciprocating, centrifugal, or rotary pump, and a variety of refrigerant controls and direct digital controls.

Skilled in a variety of ways, the AOC maintenance mechanic also dismantles, repairs, and reassembles units such as pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers and evaporators.

They handle all kinds of mechanical issues such as installing and fits connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings, and bushing; overhauling valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings, and by aligning motors and flywheel drives.

A critical part of the AOC the maintenance mechanic ensures the important work of Capitol Hill can always occur in an environment that is safe and comfortable for everyone.
