The AOC has identified areas throughout the Capitol that contain historic paint colors or decoration that need restoration. In many of these areas the plaster has cracked under the stress and weight of multiple paint layers, a result of decades of repainting wall and ceiling surfaces. These areas have been marked for paint analysis; a process that allows the AOC to record what finishes were used in the past before repairing the wall. In support of the Dome Restoration Project trucks deliver equipment and supplies to the East and West Fronts of the U.S. Capitol between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Flagmen direct pedestrians to use the sidewalk during the delivery process for safety. Additionally, a staging area has been established on the northwest lawn of the U.S. Capitol for the duration of the project.... More »
Construction activities for the repair and replacement of the Hart Senate Office Building’s roof and skylights are underway. In support of this effort, a portion of the sidewalk along C street, between the Hart and Dirksen Senate Office Buildings, will be closed through the summer of 2015. The sidewalk closure is required for a material hoist on the side of the building that will facilitate delivery of construction materials to the roof. AOC is undertaking a multi-year project to repair, clean and preserve the Olmsted Terrace masonry walls around the Capitol Building. The current phase project includes the dismantling, repair, reinstallation and comprehensive restoration of the Capitol's north approach walls (near the Senate doors), pedestal, steps and curb. Due to its advanced age, the House of Representatives is in the early planning stages for a top-to-bottom renewal of the Cannon Building. The AOC has assembled a team of in-house experts and consultants who are working with House leaders to define key aspects of the project. Construction for the Cannon Renewal Project is anticipated to begin in 2015.

Restoration of the Grant Memorial is expected to begin late fall with the conservation of the bronze sculptures, which includes properly cleaning, repair, full patination, restoration of lost elements, and application of protective coatings of the two large sculptural groups (Artillery and Cavalry), one equestrian statue (Grant), four reclining lions statues, and two relief plaques.
More »Preparations are underway, near 2nd St and Washington Ave SW, for the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial (www.avdlm.org). Memorial construction in and around the footprint of the site (from the southwest of Washington Avenue and northeast of 2nd Street SW) will continue through the fall of 2014.
