The Old Supreme Court Chamber is the first room constructed for the use of the nation's highest judiciary body and was used by the Court from 1810 until 1860. Built by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, it was a significant architectural achievement, for the size and structure of its vaulted, semicircular ceiling were virtually unprecedented in the United States.

Hart Senate Office Building Roof and Skylight Replacement

Work Photography of a Worker repairing the Hart Roof at sunset.

Construction activities for the repair and replacement of the Hart Senate Office Building’s roof and skylights are underway. In support of this effort, a portion of the sidewalk along C street, between the Hart and Dirksen Senate Office Buildings, will be closed through the summer of 2015. The sidewalk closure is required for a material hoist on the side of the building that will facilitate delivery of construction materials to the roof. Signage will be posted to assist pedestrian traffic affected by the sidewalk closure. The AOC has installed hanging scaffolding throughout the Hart Building atrium to support interior construction and repair activities related with the project.

In December 2014, skylight replacement will begin and will continue through the spring of 2015.

Construction activities are expected to continue through the summer of 2015.
