While Obamacare Helps Millions, McConnell Resorts to Defund Playbook That Led to Shutdown

Apr 16, 2014

IN KENTUCKY AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY, OBAMACARE IS WORKING

Gallup: Nearly 10 Million People Got New Health Insurance Thanks to Obamacare: "In total, 9.9 million people got insurance since the last quarter of 2013, bringing the number of uninsured Americans down from 43.5 million to 36.3 million, Gallup says. "We feel pretty comfortable attributing much of this change to the Affordable Care Act," Witters told NBC News." [NBC News, 4/16/14]

Lexington Herald Leader: 402,000 Kentuckians Have Signed Up for Health Care Under Kynect: "According to statistics released by the governor's office, people were signing up at a rate of 4,500 a day, bringing to the total number enrolled to 402,000. The final tally will be announced next week. According to state officials, nearly 1 out of every 11 Kentuckians, or 9.3 percent of the state's population, have received insurance under the program as of midday Friday. When open enrollment began Oct. 1, state officials estimated that there were 640,000 uninsured in Kentucky." [Lexington Herald Leader, 4/11/14]

BUT MINORITY LEADER MCCONNELL INSISTS ON TRYING TO DEFUND OBAMACARE AGAIN

"McConnell said Americans worried about 'Obamacare' should work to elect a Republican Senate and 'link it up with the House,' which he said would allow Republicans an opportunity to control spending and force the president to capitulate. The senator said that with a majority, Republicans could introduce 'riders' that say 'no money shall be spent to do this or that.' Only then, McConnell said, would Obama be forced to revisit his proclamation that the health care law is 'here to stay.'" [Lexington Herald Leader, 4/15/14]

SEN. MCCONNELL SHOULD HEED HIS OWN ADVICE: DEFUNDING OBAMACARE "HAD NO CHANCE OF SUCCESS."

"'We got off track with a tactical error earlier starting in July and August that diverted our attention away from what was achievable,' McConnell said bluntly of the defund Obamacare push. 'And so we'll be back at it in January and February, which is why the best you can say is, 'It's a punt.''" [Politico, 10/18/13]

"'It was not a smart play. It had no chance of success,' McConnell said of the defund Obamacare push." [Politico, 10/18/13]
