National Defense

The United States remains the guiding light that shines for freedom across the world. But those very freedoms that serve as an inspiration to so many also compel some to take arms against us. Jihadist terrorism remains the most pressing threat to our national security today. Al-Qaeda and other radical groups throughout the world are committed to our destruction as a nation, and to the destabilization of the Middle East. As a member of the subcommittee on Intelligence, Emerging Threats and Capabilities on the House Armed Services Committee, I know how important it is that we continue to use all means necessary to defend this great nation against acts of terror.

The September 11th atrocities in Benghazi, and the attack on the Boston Marathon, are a chilling reminder that terrorists continue to seek the destruction of the United States and her allies.  The targeting and killing of innocents will not be tolerated.  Now, more than ever we must remain vigilant and provide the necessary support for our men and women serving in uniform to continue defending freedom.

I believe that the United States must play a proactive role in dealing with threats before they occur on our soil, and serve as a leader in the international fight against terror.  I support efforts in Congress to develop new technologies and training programs that will prepare our first responders for new and dangerous threats. The protection of the American people from all threats, foreign and domestic is the most vital responsibility Congress has to uphold.

Those who serve in the defense of freedom need access to the best resources we can provide to support their continued success, and I do not believe that President Obama’s sequester should in any way affect military readiness. Because of this, I am a proud cosponsor of H.R. 593, the Down Payment to Protect National Security Act of 2013, which reiterated my belief that sequester should in no way increase the risk to military personnel, or hamper the fighting abilities of our Armed Forces through furloughs.
