(Washington) – Today, Congressman John B. Larson released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed S. 1557, the “Children's Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act of 2013”. The legislation authorizes funding for children’s hospital graduate medical education programs and passed the House by voice vote.
“We must provide our hospitals the resources they need to train tomorrow’s pediatricians,” said Congressman Larson. “Funding made possible by this act will continue to offer hospitals nationwide, including the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, an avenue for educating our future pediatric physician workforce. I applaud passage of this important, bipartisan legislation that will help improve the health of our children for years to come.
Children’s hospital graduate medical programs receive federal funding towards education and training for resident physicians. Serving as the Pediatrics Department for the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center has trained over 200 new pediatricians, with more than 80 currently practicing in state.
