Ayotte Seeks Answers on Libya from NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe
Armed Services Committee Member Seeks Definition Of Success, Regular Updates On Cost
WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today pressed NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe James Stavridis for answers on the precise goals of American involvement in Libya.
At an Armed Services Committee hearing, Senator Ayotte asked Admiral Stavridis to lay out our specific objectives and to define what success will mean for the United States in Libya. She also requested regular updates on the cost of the military operation and asked Admiral Stavridis to closely examine a report that al Qaeda affiliates may have seized surface to air missiles from an arsenal in Libya during the civil strife there.
"With questions about our involvement in Libya still unanswered after the president's national address, I'm using my position on the Armed Services Committee to get greater clarity on the Administration's goals," said Ayotte. "The American people deserve to know what the Obama Administration hopes to accomplish in Libya as well as what it will cost."
In addition to today's Armed Services hearing with the NATO Supreme Allied Commander, on Wednesday Senator Ayotte will join other senators to receive a briefing from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. On Thursday, the Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing specifically dedicated to Libya and Operation Unified Protector.
