Landrieu Congratulates Barksdale on School Improvement Award

August 4, 2014

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., (Military Mary) today congratulated Barksdale Air Force Base on receiving the Military Child Education Coalition’s Award for Excellence in Outstanding Partnerships. The award, titled the “2014 Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award,” recognizes the partnerships and work by the Barksdale/Bossier Connection that includes Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier Parish School District, Barksdale Forward, the Cyber Innovation Center, Bossier Chamber of Commerce and Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation for serving the needs of the bases military children.

“I am proud of the work done by Barksdale and local community leaders to best serve the children of the men and women who sacrifice so much to keep our country safe. This public-private partnership continues to be a great success because it operates understanding of the challenges military families face, ensuring these students get the best possible education,” Sen. Landrieu said. “This award is another reminder of the strength of Louisiana’s commitment to our service members and their families and another example of how Northwest Louisiana is working together to make Barksdale Air Force Base stronger than ever.”

“The partnership with BAFB helps to keep the local economy stable by supporting one of the region’s largest economic drivers” said Bossier Chamber president Lisa Johnson. “It’s important to us at the Bossier Chamber that the military families know they are supported and welcome into our community. Their presence in the community plays a part in our prosperity.”

"Barksdale Forward is proud of this award because it shows the the partership of the community in Bossier, Shreveport and Barksdale and how important that relationship is for the military children at the base," said Murray Viser, President of Barksdale Forward.

The Cyber Innovation Center (CIC) is honored to be an active member of the Barksdale/Bossier Connection, which allows us to invest in our community and the military families that serve our great nation.  The CIC, through our robust academic outreach program, supports the approximately 2,000 military students in our area schools.  We are proud and humbled that the Barksdale/Bossier Connection was recently recognized with the Military Child Education Coalition’s 2014 Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award,” said GB Cazes, vice president of the Cyber Innovation Center.

Last month, Sen. Landrieu inserted language into the bill that funds the Department of Defense (DOD) for FY15 that requires the Air Force to develop a detailed plan within 90 days of the bill becoming law on how it will modernize the nation’s five nuclear weapons storage areas, including the one at Barksdale Air Force Base that is currently not utilized.

Additionally, Sen. Landrieu secured a total of $25 million for the STARBASE Program—a science and engineering educational opportunity for 5th grade students located on military installations throughout Louisiana, including in Barksdale, Jackson Barracks and Camp Beauregard.

Sen. Landrieu announced in May that the Air Force has recommended to the Secretary of Defense that a four-star general lead the Global Strike Nuclear Command at Barksdale Air Force base. In 2009, Sen. Landrieu led the Louisiana delegation’s effort to locate the Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force base.
