Americans Want Action on Immigration Reform

It's been 510 days since the Senate passed bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform. Republicans repeatedly promised to act on immigration reform. They refused to act on the Senate immigration bill or move their own proposals. Instead, Republicans made excuses for their inaction.

The American people want action on immigration reform.


Pew: More Than 70% of Americans Support Legal Status for Undocumented Immigrants:

"When it comes to immigration policy, roughly seven-in-ten (71%) continue to support a way for undocumented immigrants to gain legal status if certain requirements are met. ... Overall support for a legal pathway is little changed from earlier this year. Democrats support allowing undocumented immigrants who meet requirements to stay, by a margin of 82% to 16%. Republicans also favor a pathway to legal status, but by a narrower (57% to 39%) margin" [Pew, 10/23/14]

Gallup: 79% of Americans Say Government Steps to Deal with Undocumented Immigrants This Year Is "Very Important" or "Extremely Important":

Asked "how important is it to you that the government takes steps this year to deal with developing a plan to deal with the large number of illegal immigrants who are already living in the U.S., 79% of Americans said government action to deal with undocumented immigrants this year is either "extremely important" or "very important." [Gallup, 2/10/14]

CBS News Poll: Majority of Americans Support Executive Order on Immigration:

Asked if President Obama should take action by executive order for immigration reform, 51% of Americans said Obama should act on immigration. This includes 66% of Democrats and a plurality of independents. [CBS, 9/17/14]

ABC News/Washington Post Poll: Majority of Americans Want Action on Immigration:

"At the same time, though, the public by 52-44 percent would like to see Obama act unilaterally on immigration if Congress doesn't take action, suggesting a general weariness with the lack of progress on the issue." [ABC News, 9/9/14]

CNN 2014 Exit Poll: 57% of Americans Say Undocumented Workers Should Be Offered Legal Status:

Asked if most illegal immigrants working in the U.S. should be offered legal status or deported, 57% of voters said that most should be offered legal status. Only 39% said most should be deported. [CNN Poll]
