Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) and Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers (MI-13) led 28 colleagues to reintroduce a constitutional amendment to address the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC.  The amendment to the U.S. Constitution would reverse the Supreme Court’s unprecedented application of the First Amendment to corporations allowing them to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections.  The amendment will give specific authority to Congress and the states to regulate corporate expenditures on political activity.

“Congress has the responsibility to once-and-for-all close the door to unlimited corporate and individual spending in our elections,” said Representative Edwards. “Citizens United paved the way for the 2012 election to cost over $7 billion, with $2.1 billion spent by outside political committees, including $970 million in Super PAC spending.  This constitutional amendment is the only way to ensure the American people, and not corporations, are permanently in charge of our political process.  I am proud to join Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Conyers for the third consecutive Congress to reintroduce this legislation critical to the health of our democracy.”
