Republicans Continue March to Extreme Right on Immigration

More than 500 days ago, the Senate passed a bipartisan immigration bill to fix our broken immigration system. Since then, Republicans have made every excuse in the book to excuse their inaction and repeatedly broken commitments to move towards a responsible solution. That's why President Obama took an important step to fix our immigration system.

Instead of working to permanently solve the problem, Republicans have pushed even further right. We urge Speaker Boehner to finally act on the bipartisan Senate immigration bill before the House adjourns for the year.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA): "Anchor Babies Will Be An Automatic Human Shield":

King told host and Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon that Obama's executive amnesty announcement on Thursday means that "anchor babies will be an automatic human shield for the mothers and fathers of the anchor babies." [Breitbart, 11/23/14]

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) Compared Executive Action Helping Millions to Japanese Internment Camps:

"Think of what happened in World War II where they made the decision. The president issued an executive order. He said to Japanese people 'we're going to put you in a camp. We're going to take away all your rights and liberties and we're going to intern you in a camp." [TPM, 11/21/14]

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX): "There Are Reasons If One Wanted To Pursue" Impeachment:

"Well, impeachment is indictment, and it's for high crimes and misdemeanors. I certainly believe the president is in violation of his constitutional authority, Article 1, Section 1 gives legislative authority to the Congress, not to the president. But we have never -- we have impeached several presidents in the House. We have never convicted a president in the Senate. The president's only got two more years in his term. I would think it would be prudent to work to show the American people we can govern and not get bogged down in an impeachment process which just takes all the oxygen out of room. But I do think there are reasons if one wanted to pursue that path, you could consider it." [CNN, 11/22/14]

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL): Throw the President in Jail:

"At some point, you have to evaluate whether the president's conduct aids or abets, encourages, or entices foreigners to unlawfully cross into the United States of America," he continued. "That has a five-year in-jail penalty associated with it." [Slate, 11/20/14]

Washington Post: "Conservative Leaders Pleaded With Congressional Republicans To Consider Articles Of Impeachment":

Beyond Capitol Hill, conservative leaders pleaded with congressional Republicans to consider articles of impeachment against Obama and weigh using budget maneuvers to confront the president, even if it leads to the second government shutdown in two years.

"It is idiocy for Republican leaders to constantly repeat that they are taking the power of the purse and impeachment off the table," said Richard Viguerie, a longtime conservative activist. "Those are the very tools the Constitution bestows upon Congress to rein in a lawless president." [Washington Post, 11/23/14]
