The New Front in Republican Obstruction: GOP Now Blocking Their Own Bills

Jul 10, 2014

In an incredible escalation of the politics of obstruction, proud guardian of gridlock Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans just filibustered S. 2363, the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act, despite the fact that a majority of Senate Republicans co-sponsor the bill. All twenty six Republican co-sponsors voted against cloture, denying even an up-or-down-vote on passage of a bill they support.

This is just the latest example of Republican obstruction of bills and nominations they support. Today's filibuster of the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act marks the fourth time Senate Republicans have blocked a final vote on a bill they co-sponsor:

113th Congress

All 26 Republican co-sponsors voted against cloture on the bill, denying the 60 votes needed for cloture. [113th Congress, 2nd Session, RCV 220]

S.2262, Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2014

Bill co-sponsors Senators Hoeven, Isakson and Wicker voted against cloture on the bill, denying the 60 votes needed for cloture. Murkowski, also a co-sponsor, did not vote. [113th Congress, 2nd Session, RCV 142]

112th Congress

S. 782, Economic Development Revitalization Act of 2011

Bill co-sponsor Sen. Inhofe voted against cloture on the bill. [112th Congress, 1st Session, RCV 94]

S. 493, SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act of 2011

Bill co-sponsors Senators Ayotte, Brown (MA), and Snowe voted against cloture on the bill. [112th Congress, 1st Session, RCV 64]
