Native Hawaiian

So much of Hawaii’s unique culture is based in Native Hawaiian language and traditions – it is in the language we speak, the food we eat, and certainly the aloha spirit we all share. I believe there is more we can learn from Hawaiian culture, including sustainability from a people who lived and thrived in the most isolated place on Earth.

I’ve been proud to support innovative, culturally appropriate, education projects for Native Hawaiian students, from early education programs like Tutu and Me to college scholarships provided by programs like Liko A‘e. Native Hawaiian health programs play a critical role in combating the higher rates of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes Native Hawaiians suffer than non-Hawaiians. I believe the United States must acknowledge its trust relationship with the Hawaiian people, which is why I have introduced the Native Hawaiian Homeownership Opportunity Act to help Native Hawaiian families afford homes.

As early as 1975, with the introduction of the Hawaiian Native Claims Settlement Act, the Hawaii delegation has been dedicated to achieving parity for Native Hawaiians, by pursuing the same right to self-determination as Alaska Natives and Native Americans. During my time in Congress, I have worked to promote this high legislative priority, and will continue to do so in the Senate.
