Chairman Becerra Hails “Game Changer” On Immigration

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the President announced the steps his Administration will take to fix, where he can, our country’s broken immigration system:

“President Obama’s decision today is a game changer for our economy, our security and our families. I wholeheartedly support the President’s measured use of his authority under the Constitution to set us on a course to finally fix our broken immigration system. His plan will bolster border enforcement, prioritize deporting felons over families, and require immigrants to undergo background checks and pay taxes.

“After years of delay and dysfunction in Congress, the President’s action is welcomed progress. But it is still no substitute for a permanent legislative solution. The next commonsense step must be taken by Congress – Democrats and Republicans. We must all be held accountable for fixing where we can our broken immigration system. I look forward to getting the rest of the job done.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Hoy, el congresistaXavier Becerra (CA-34), presidente del Caucus Demócrata en la Cámara de Representantes, emitió la siguiente declaración después de que el Presidente Obama anunció los pasos que su Administración tomará para arreglar, donde sea posible, nuestro sistema de inmigración roto:

“La decisión del Presidente Obama hoy es un momento transformador para nuestra economía, nuestra seguridad y nuestras familias. Apoyo sin reservas las acciones del Presidente, usando su autoridad bajo la Constitución, para poner en marcha un curso para finalmente arreglar nuestro sistema roto de inmigración. Su plan reforzará nuestra seguridad fronteriza, dará prioridad a la deportación de criminales en lugar de las familias, y requerirá que los inmigrantes se sometan a verificaciones de antecedentes y paguen impuestos.

“Después de años de retraso y disfunción en el Congreso, damos la bienvenida al progreso que la acción del Presidente representa. Sin embargo, no reemplaza la necesidad para una solución legislativa y permanente. El siguiente paso debe ser tomado por el Congreso – por ambos demócratas y republicanos.
