Chairman Becerra Votes Against Tea Party Mass Deportation Bill

December 4, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against legislation (H.R. 5759) that would revoke deferred action for hard-working DREAMers and immigrant families, putting them at risk for deportation:

“For 525 days, our nation’s families and businesses have waited for the bipartisan Senate immigration bill to come up for a vote in the House of Representatives. In that time, House Republicans have refused to act and blamed others for their inaction. In the face of this reform shutdown, the President stepped up and took action within his legal authority to make our immigration system work better and smarter. He did what President Ronald Reagan did and what every American President has done for the last fifty years.

“Now, House Republicans are doubling down on the Tea Party’s mass deportation agenda by revoking deferred action for hard-working DREAMers and immigrant families and putting at risk our nation’s homeland security operations. With precious few days left in the current 113th Congress, we should be solving the problems confronting our nation, not making things worse. It’s long past time that we got to work and finally passed commonsense immigration reform supported by the American people.”
