Chairman Becerra On Ferguson Grand Jury Decision: “We Have Serious Work To Do”

November 26, 2014

Washington D.C. – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement on the events surrounding the grand jury’s decision in the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri:

“Words are hard to come by in the aftermath of the grand jury’s decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in August. We want to believe that our criminal justice system works for all of us and for any one of us. Yet, in some ways, the events surrounding Michael Brown’s death and the subsequent investigation raise as many questions as they answer.

“This grand jury has spoken. Where we go from here will speak louder about who we are as a people than this one decision by twelve of our fellow Americans. The jury is still out on how we, as one people, and our system of justice will respond to the cries for equal justice under the law for young men of color. We have serious work to do.”
