John D. Dingell

John D. Dingell represents the 16th Congressional District of Michigan which includes parts of Wayne county and all of Monroe county in Southeastern Michigan. He has served more consecutive terms than any other Member of Congress in the House of Representatives, and serves as the Ranking Member on the Commerce Committee.

As an advocate of health care, Dingell introduced the Patients' Bill of Rights, the next step in incremental health care reform. Also, he serves on the Medicare Commission to review Medicare and the obstacles that this popular program will face as the "baby boomer" generation reaches retirement age. Both of these important initiatives will help shape the way we look at health care and play an important role in American's lives as we move into the next century.

Congressman Dingell works actively with local officials promoting economic development, solving local problems and meeting community needs. He led the fight for full funding of the Clean Water Act which improved the water quality of the Great Lakes, and is now spearheading efforts to fund the Rouge River cleanup.

Over Congressman Dingell's tenure, he has written landmark legislation to protect the environment, promote American competitiveness, defend consumers from unsafe products and unfair practices, and assure all Americans have access to affordable, quality health care. He has written legislation to improve energy efficiency, stop securities and telemarketing fraud, and lower cable television rates by promoting competition in the industry. Dingell has been instrumental in writing every major law to improve air quality standards, including the Clean Air Act of 1990. He led investigations to end corruption and waste in the public and private sectors, and is regularly cited as one of the most effective Members of Congress by national publications.

John D. Dingell received his bachelor's and law degrees from Georgetown University, and before he was elected to public office, he served in the U.S. Army, worked as a Park Ranger, and was Assistant Prosecutor for Wayne County, Michigan. He is a member of the Michigan State Bar and serves on the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission. John D. Dingell is married to the former Deborah Insley and has four children and two grandchildren.
