Should local law enforcement use military equipment?
E-mail Address:*
Attorney General Eric Holder said he is concerned about police use of military equipment in Ferguson, Missouri. Should local law enforcement receive free, surplus military equipment such as camouflage uniforms, assault rifles, machine guns, Humvees, and Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicles from the Department of Defense?
No. Military equipment belongs in warzones and battlefields. Otherwise, it incentivizes the use of aggressive accessories to handle ordinary law enforcement activity.
Yes. Local law enforcement should be trained to use the military equipment properly to deescalate violent conditions. Additionally, the public should be notified when such equipment is being furnished to local authorities.
I do not know.
