As a fellow Long Islander, Congresswoman McCarthy knows how frustrating airplane noise can be on a day-to-day basis and has been a leader in the fight against to curb excessive noise pollution in her district. Throughout her time in Congress, she has remained committed to preserving the quality of life on Long Island and will continue to ensure that Long Island remains a desirable place to live.

In April 2013, Congresswoman McCarthy held a meeting with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, FAA Administrator Huerta, representatives from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and representatives from the Town-Village-Aircraft-Safety and Noise Abatement Committee to discuss airplane noise issues on Long Island. At the meeting she discussed creating a Memorandum of Understanding between the agencies outlining the respective responsibilities of the two agencies for the ultimate purpose of actively working to reduce airplane noise. The Congresswoman also pushed for improved communication between the agencies and Long Island residents.

In August 2013, Congresswoman McCarthy wrote a letter to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey along with Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand, Rep. Israel and Rep. Meng calling for additional airplane noise monitors in Nassau County in the wake of new flight patterns into and out of LaGuardia and JFK airports.  The Congresswoman will continue to press the airlines, airport officials, regulatory officials and her colleagues in Congress to realize the scope of the problem and work to alleviate the burden of airplane noise for Long Island.
