GARDEN CITY, NY (November 21, 2014) -- Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4), a senior member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, has nominated 19 students from the Fourth Congressional District to the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The service academies provide a first-rate college education in conjunction with military training in preparation for a career in the U.S. military. To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, applicants must obtain a nomination from a Member of Congress. Final appointments are then determined by each academy.
Announcing the nominations, Rep. McCarthy said: “I am deeply honored to nominate such talented students to our nation’s service academies. Their hard work and commitment to excellence have made their schools and families proud, and their desire to serve brings confidence that our nation is in good hands for the future. I also want to thank my Citizens Review Board for helping me select the nominees. I wish all the nominees the best of luck as they move forward in the admissions process.”
The nominees from Rep. McCarthy’s district were selected after a rigorous application and interview process looking at various factors like academic performance, evidence of character, leadership ability, physical aptitude, goals and motivation.
