Foreign Affairs
Congresswoman McCarthy recognizes the importance of maintaining strong relations with nations around the globe. Foreign assistance and aid provide enhanced security for the United States and helps to promote the common values we, as Americans, share with the global community.
Israel
The Congresswoman has been a consistent supporter of foreign aid for Israel throughout her time in Congress. As a member of the Democratic Israel Working Group, the Congresswoman strives to protect both Israeli and American interests and promote Israel given theirespecially tumultuous geopoliticalenvironment. The Congresswoman was proud to support the FY14 Omnibus that generously funded Israeli Cooperative Missile Defense programs and the Iron Dome, projects she has long stood behind. The Congresswoman will continue to advocate for mutual interests between the United States and Israel going forward, including promoting the passage of theUnited States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2013, a bill that declares Israel a major strategic partner of the United States and authorizes US-Israeli energy cooperation, and improves cyber-security cooperation.
Iran
Iran has consistently been at odds with a majority of the international community. The country’s continued disregard for religious minorities, anti-Semitism, and steadfast pursuit of a robust nuclear weapons program, are all reasons for tremendous concern. As such, the Congresswoman is a cosponsor of the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act, which broadens economic sanctions; strengthens human rights sanctions; and increases oversight of the implementation and enforcement of current sanctions.
The group of six world powers (the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, France and Germany), better known as the P5+1, has been engaged in negotiations to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. On November 23, 2013 they reached a set of initial understandings that halts the progress of Iran's nuclear program while providing some sanctions relief. Congresswoman McCarthy believes that any interim agreement of that kind must be easily and quickly reversible. Further, she believes that any final deal must include verifiable steps to dismantle Iran's nuclear weapons technology, such as turning over its stockpile of heavily enriched uranium and getting rid of centrifuges needed for enrichment.
The Congresswoman strongly believes that the United States must ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons capability, and that a negotiated settlement with Iran over its nuclear program must take into account the security interests of the United States and our friends and allies in the region.
