Environment and Natural Resources
Congresswoman McCarthy is working hard to protect our national forests, combat the effects of global warming, and ensure the safety of our drinking water and the cleanliness of the air. America’s natural resources are a God-given treasure – and one that we must protect for our children and for future generations.
H.R. 3080, Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA)
Congresswoman McCarthy supported H.R. 3080, the Water Resources Reform and Development Act, which would provide funds for the improvement of our Nation’s waterways, rivers and harbors. As Long Islanders, we know the importance that our water resources bring to Long Island, its economy, and our way of life. We must continue to maintain these precious resources for generations to come. The legislation also included funds for construction of projects to mitigate damage caused by natural disasters and improve flood management. After Superstorm Sandy, these funds will be vital in preparing Long Island for future storms. The House of Representatives passed WRRDA on October 23, 2013. A conference committee was established to negotiate the differences between the House and Senate. The bill eventually passed both chambers of Congress and was signed into law by the President on June 10, 2014.
Coastal State Climate Change
Over the years, it has become evident that man has made a significant impact on our environment and natural resources. As a Member of Congress from a coastal district, Congresswoman McCarthy cosponsored the Coastal State Climate Change Planning Act, which authorizes the Secretary of Commerce to establish coastal climate change adaption planning and response programs to provide assistance – both financial and technical – to states who voluntarily develop adaption plans to minimize the negative consequences of climate change in the coastal zone. It also authorizes the Commerce Department to make grants available to coastal states to develop such plans and support the implementation of these adaption plans.
Long Island Aviation History Act
Congresswoman McCarthy authored the Long Island Aviation History Act to direct the Secretary of the Interior to carry out a special resource study of Long Island. This study would focus on the Hempstead Plains, areas surrounding Suffolk County Air Force Base, the hamlet of Bethpage and Port Washington, and the village of Farmingdale. This study would determine the feasibility of designating parts of Long Island as a unit of the National Park System to commemorate Long Island’s rich aviation history.
