H.R. 698, the "HIV Organ Policy Equity Act"

Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) introduced H.R. 698, the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act.  This is a bipartisan bill that directs the federal Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to allow the transplantation of human organs infected with HIV into individuals already infected with the HIV virus. The Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services would be required to establish guidelines, standards and regulations regarding the transplantation of organs infected with HIV.

On November 12, 2013, the House took up the Senate version of the bill, S. 330, and passed the legislation by voice vote.  S. 330 was signed into law on November 21, 2013.
