  • Albuquerque Journal: New farm bill a boon for NM's farmers, ranchers, families in need

    It took a couple of years, but Congress has finally passed major legislation to assist American farmers and extend the nation's food stamp program. Perhaps most shockingly, they did it by a rare and wide bipartisan margin. The House approved the trillion dollar farm bill in late January by a 251-166 margin. The Senate followed suit last week, voting 68-32 to send it to President Obama's desk. All five members of New Mexico's congressional delegation voted for the bill.

  • Albuquerque Business First: Lujan: Problems for the unemployed worsening

    Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-03) said that a new report shows nearly 72,000 people are losing unemployment insurance every week because Congress has failed to approve an extension for those benefits. Luján said The analysis by House Ways and Means Committee Democrats found that more than 1.6 million Americans, including 7,492 New Mexicans have lost coverage since the end of December.

    Quay County is among 27 counties in New Mexico qualifying for emergency loan assistance from the federal Farm Service Agency (FSA) due to losses caused by the ongoing drought, according to a statement issued jointly by U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Representatives Steve Pearce, Ben Ray Luján, and Michelle Lujan Grisham.
