Today, Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Ranking Member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, sent a letter to Committee Chairman Fred Upton, asking him to assert the Committee’s jurisdiction over H.R. 4012, the Secret Science Reform Act.  This bill, which the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology voted to report last week, could significantly impede implementation of multiple environmental statutes within the jurisdiction of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

The Republican-led House of Representatives in on track to mark a grim milestone today:  the 500th vote on the floor to undermine protection of the environment.  In the 112th Congress, the House Republicans voted 317 times for anti-environment positions.  In 2013, the anti-environment votes increased by 109 to 426.  Today, the House is likely to cast its 500th anti-environment vote since the Republicans took control in January 2011.

Today Ranking Members Henry A. Waxman and Diana DeGette sent a letter to Chairmen Fred Upton and Tim Murphy to request hearings on the implications to seniors, taxpayers, Part D drug plans, and the Medicare program of the high costs of Sovaldi, the new Hepatitis C drug manufactured by Gilead Pharmaceuticals.  The drug costs $84,000 for a course of treatment and a new analysis by researchers from Georgetown University and the Kaiser Family Foundation finds that Medicare Part D coverage for Sovaldi alone will increase Medicare drug spending by $6.5 billion - 8%- in 2015.

Today Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman sent a letter to Chairman Fred Upton regarding the release of a new HHS report that demonstrates the significant savings millions of Americans are enjoying as a result of the Affordable Care Act.  It contradicts an analysis released by Chairman Upton, which asserts premiums would rise dramatically.  The new report shows that in fact, because of the ACA consumers are now paying significantly less for significantly better coverage.

Today Chairman Fred Upton and Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman wrote a letter to Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), commending the agency for reclassifying sunlamps as class II devices which require labeling that strongly urges use only by persons 18 and over.
