THOMPSON CALLS FOR ACTION FOLLOWING HINDS COUNTY BALLOT IRREGULARITIES IN NOVEMBER ELECTION

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) released the following statement regarding his letter to Hinds County (Mississippi) District Attorney Robert Smith about irregularities in the November 4, 2014, General Election. Hinds County Election Commission Chairwoman Connie Cochran admitted to having broken the law by failing to order the state-mandated number of ballots, threatening thousands of Mississippians’ constitutional right to vote.

In the letter, Congressman Thompson states: “It is unconscionable that one individual could single-handedly deny thousands of Hinds County residents the opportunity to vote. Far too many individuals have fought and died for the right to vote to have someone like Ms. Cochran decide that citizens of Hinds County should not have a voice because ‘it might rain.’ Her actions are, at best, criminal and, absolutely, deceitful and treacherous.”
