Thompson Mourns Death of World Leader and Activist Nelson Mandela

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) released the following statement regarding the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of South African President Nelson Mandela.  In 1994, I was honored to be a part of the Congressional delegation that attended Nelson Mandela’s first inauguration. Mandela’s life was one of the greatest examples of forgiveness and tolerance that the world has seen. Despite his 27 year term of incarceration, he remained steadfast in his commitment to eliminate societal inequality in South Africa. He was a kind and gentle man, who was loved by all, and will be missed immensely. Leaders of today and tomorrow can look to Mandela’s legacy as a roadmap for putting the needs of others above self,” said Congressman Thompson.
